AHCC and other alternative therapies for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is a major concern for most middle-aged and elderly men, and routine PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level screenings are the most common way to assess the risk or presence of prostate cancer. Many men are now searching for alternatives to conventional treatment methods. In a recent NY Times article, Dr. Katz, a urologist expert, describes alternative prostate cancer prevention and treatment protocols. AHCC, active hexose correlated compound, a medicinal mushroom extract that enhances the immune response, is included in this regimen.

Dr. Aaron E. Katz, director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center and author of “The Definitive Guide to Prostate Cancer,” is a medical expert in the urology field. To learn more about Dr. Katz, click here.

AHCC is an oligosaccharide extracted from mushrooms grown in rice bran. It was developed in Japan in 1989 and it has since been used to improve the immunity of over 100,000 patients. AHCC has shown promise for severe immunodeficiencies and to reduce inflammation. AHCC contains the active components alpha and beta glucans and GI saccharides.

AHCC is remarkable because it has the ability to stimulate the immune system. Oral supplementation with AHCC increases the production by immune cells of at least two protein messengers. These proteins promote the production of macrophages, T cells and natural killer (NK) cells and improve their ability to destroy abnormal cells. Immune cells are important for health in general but are specifically involved with the control of infection and cancer. Cancer is a disease of the immune system. It is up to our immune system to recognize and destroy abnormal cells. Click here for information on AOR’s AHCC.

Among other herbal treatment recommendations, Dr. Katz includes Vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, herbal anti-inflammatories such as curcumin, boswellia, and quercetin, red grapes, green tea, deeply colour fruits such as pomegranates, and greatly increasing cruciferous vegetable consumption.
