Olive Leaf Extract Helps to Reduce Blood Pressure

The benefits of olive leaf have long been recognized by Mediterranean people. Olive leaf extract is especially well known for its antioxidant, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Recent evidence has also suggested that supplementation with olive leaf extract can have antihypertensive effects. A new study investigating the ability of olive leaf extract to lower blood pressure in pairs of identical twins provides further support for this.

The study included 20 pairs of identical twins with slight hypertension. The twins were divided into 2 groups of 10 pairs. In the first group one twin from each pair was treated with 500mg of olive leaf extract and the other received no medication. In the second group one twin was given 500mg and the other 1000mg of olive leaf extract. The blood pressure of all participants was then monitored over the course of 8 weeks. The results of the study revealed that blood pressure levels changed significantly between corresponding twins depending on the dose of olive leaf extract they received. The largest effect was seen in those taking the 1000mg dose, who experienced up to a 19/10mmHG (systolic/diastolic) decrease in blood pressure compared to their twin, and a continuous average reduction of 11/5 mmHg over the eight week period. These results clearly demonstrate the antihypertensive effects of olive leaf extract.

The mechanism of action of olive leaf extract on blood pressure is though oleuropein, a major component of olive leaves that has a strong vasodilatory effect. Oleuropein acts to widen blood vessels, which enhances circulation and reduces blood pressure. Oleuropein is also an antioxidant, and its ability to scavenge free radicals could help reduce oxidative stress, which may also contribute to its blood pressure lowering effects.
